Ask AFC: What Fibre Cement Cladding Should I Use? (Practical, No-Fluff Answers)

Ask AFC: choosing fibre cement cladding (answers to the questions we get every week)

We get a lot of the same questions from builders, renovators and owner-builders. Here are practical answers from the PPC Fibre Cement team—focused on what actually changes your material list, lead time and final finish.

1) “I searched ‘fibre cement cladding’ and now I’m lost. What are the main categories?”

Think in three buckets:

  • Weatherboards (lap look): HardiePlank, Primeline, etc.
  • Grooved boards (vertical lines): Scyon Axon
  • Panelised cladding (architectural panels): Scyon Matrix and similar

2) “Is HardieFlex a cladding?”

HardieFlex is a flat sheet used in many applications. It can be part of an external wall system in some cases, but it’s most commonly used for eaves/soffits and linings. If you tell us your application, we’ll confirm the right product and the accessories you’ll need.

3) “What’s the biggest mistake people make when ordering cladding?”

Ordering boards without the system items: wraps, cavity battens, flashings, trims (H-mould/J-mould/corners), sealant, and the right fasteners. That’s what causes delays mid-job.

4) “Do I need different trims for Axon vs Matrix?”

Usually, yes. The detailing changes (joints, expressed gaps, corners), so the trims and sealants can change too. Bring your elevations (or a photo of what you’re matching) and we’ll help you map out the parts list.

5) “How do I get a quick quote from AFC?”

  1. Tell us the product name (or the look you want)
  2. Share wall area / elevations
  3. Let us know frame type (timber/steel) and exposure (coastal etc.)

Then we’ll confirm availability, sheet sizes and the extras you need so you can order once.
