AFC Expert Knowledge: How to Choose the Right Fibre Cement Sheet for Your SA Jobsite
Share
Why choosing the “right sheet” matters
On site, fibre cement sheet choices often get simplified into “just grab a sheet.” But the difference between the right sheet and the wrong sheet is usually felt later: extra joins, unexpected movement, slower installs, or a finish that doesn’t match the client’s expectations.
This is our PPC Fibre Cement (AFC) expert knowledge approach—how we help builders and renovators in SA pick the right product first time.
Step 1: define the application (don’t skip this)
- External wall cladding (feature façade, full wrap, gable ends)
- Eaves/soffits
- Internal linings (including high-traffic areas)
- Wet areas (bathrooms/laundries—needs specific lining advice)
- Flooring (interior vs exterior systems)
Once the application is clear, the product choice usually becomes obvious.
Step 2: choose the profile/finish the client actually wants
In Adelaide, most cladding decisions are driven by the look:
- Lined/vertical look: Scyon Axon Cladding
- Panelled/feature texture: Matrix Cladding
- Traditional weatherboard lap: Linea Weatherboard or HardiePlank Weatherboard
If you match the look early, you avoid re-quoting when the client changes their mind.
Step 3: plan your accessories (this is where jobs slow down)
Most delays we see aren’t the sheets—they’re the “small stuff” that finishes the job:
- Joiners and moulds (H moulds, capping moulds, foot moulds)
- Corners (internal/external corner solutions)
- Fixings (correct screws for timber/steel framing)
- Sealants/flashings for compliant detailing
For example, when you order HardieFlex Sheet, it’s smart to add the correct 6mm PVC H mould or 4.5mm H mould at the same time.
Step 4: confirm quantities with your layout (save waste)
Sheet layout is where you save real money. If you’re not sure, a quick sketch of wall sizes and openings is usually enough for us to help you estimate quantities and reduce waste.
Step 5: sanity-check compliance and finish
Always follow the manufacturer installation guide for clearances, fixing centres, joints and coating systems. If your project has BAL requirements, ensure your whole wall system is specified correctly—cladding is only one piece of the compliance puzzle.
